Photo Page 14 - NS RP-M4C Slugs - NS 622 completed and on display

NS 622 was the latest RP-M4C Slug to be completed and was open to tour

NS RP-M4C Slug units are designed to be mated to EMD/NS GP33CO, GP59E and GP59ECO masters, which
provide all power, since the slug units do not have an engine or generator.  The excess power created
by the master unit is routed to the slug via cables connected between the two when in use.  The traction
power from the master is routed to the traction motors of the slug, thereby increasing the overall tractive
effort of the pair, while using less fuel as compared to two powered locomotives. The cab on the slug
allows the consist to be safely used in either direction, and crews like being able to control the consist
with the slug leading, since it is much quieter without the engine of a normal locomotive.
